2017 Furniture for the Fight

img_5261The first of the year always has me taking to my journal feverishly planning all the things I want to accomplish for the year.  Not just vague resolutions such as, loose weight or save more money, but I mean a comprehensive plan with dates, timelines, what to do when, who to email, etc. While I’d love to drop some weight, that is at the bottom of my list.

This year rather than a resolution, I have taken on a year long project.  Let me explain…

Like many of you, I found after the 2016 election that I was beside myself.  I felt so helpless.  My heart weighed heavy for myself, women, minorities, LBGTQ, people of different religions, the list goes on and on and on.  While I sit here white and realizing I do have an advantage over others, I won’t get hit quite as hard, but still… my ovaries tremble.

But I’m just one person?  I have my day job, I work too much, I’m trying to be more creative on a regular basis. There are only so many hours in the day and so much coffee I’m willing to drink before I slip into cardiac arrest.  What can I do?

Here’s what I’ve come up with…

For every group that our dear President Elect has thrown under the bus during his campaigning days, I will be devoting one month to each group.  While I quickly realize this could easily keep me busy for the next four years, one year is where I’m starting.  For every month/group, I will be refinishing a piece of furniture influenced by this group.  Here is the best part: for every piece I sell, I will be donating a percentage of the proceeds to an organization to support the cause.  Here is the outline so far:

January is National Mentoring Month and will be donating to Big Brother Big Sister

February is Black History Month and will be donating to the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People

March is Women’s History Month and will be donating to Running Start

April has Earth Day and will be donating to Earth Justice

May is Immigrant Asian American Month will be donating to National Immigration Forum

June is LGBT Pride Month and will be donating to Lambda Legal

July will be dedicating to our Muslim Neighbors (due to the end of Eid Al Fitr) and will be donating to the Council of American Islamic Relations

August is dedicated to Water Preservation and will be donating to the Sierra Club

September is Ovarian and Prostate Awareness Month and will be donating to Planned Parenthood (most likely in Mike Pence’s name)

October is Hispanic Month and will be donating to Boarder Angels

November is Native American Heritage Month and will be donating to Native American Rights Fund

December is devoted to Civil Liberties and will be donating to ACLU

If you have read this far… Thank you.  What can you do to help? Help me spread the word.  Please.  We all can make a difference in a million little ways.  This is mine.

Happy New Year… Here’s to a better 2017.

Big News: Farmer’s Market First!

It’s no secret or surprise or even anything new that I am somewhere around a farmers market, right?  Whether it was my days slinging veggies for Johnson’s Backyard Garden, doing my own shopping, or playing music, I’m no stranger to the markets around Austin.  The one thing I haven’t done:I have not attended a farmers market as a vendor for my own business. That is until now!!

Sunday, December 11th
11:11 AM- 3 PM
HOPE Farmer’s Market
Austin, TX

This is very exciting, a little nerve wracking, and a big step for my business and myself.  Thank you to all of you that have supported me along the way.

Whatchya got in those jars?

img_4754It’s that time of year…. the weather is finally cooling down.  The holidays are coming.  It’s time to stock up on gifts and my favorite, just eat.  To help you with both, I’ve got a selection of canned goods for this holiday season.

Brandied Apple Butter

Cranberry Orange Sauce

Cranberry Jalapeno Sauce

Pear Ginger Syrup

I’ve got them in 8 ounce and 4 ounce jars.  Perfect for eating out of the jar, spreading on turkey, mixed in a cocktail, spread on pound cake, the possibilities are endless.  I’ll have them available at the East Austin Studio Tours tomorrow and Sunday.  Whatever is still available on Monday, I will be glad to ship out!

The Ombre Affect

I have admittedly never played with this trend known as the “Ombre Affect” before.  Not with my hair, nails, eyeshadow, etc. I thought, maybe with furniture it would be a little safer or at least, less likely to have an effect on my overall appearence that might scare my friends and family.  That’s not to say that I wouldn’t rock it, but as bold as this piece is, I think my hair is just fine.

I played with a light green and bold turquoise latex paint, topped with a durable polyurethane finish.  I love it.  I wish I had a spot in my apartment for this bad boy (or girl).

Baby Step…. Stools

I always like to have a couple of furniture pieces going at a time. Sometimes it’s a nice to have a couple small pieces between larger pieces for a little bit of that instant satisfaction feeling.  Stools always seem to be a great candidate for this.  What better than baby stools?!

I got these pieces raw, no refinishing required.  I wanted to go for something playful.  I went for a much more textured baby blue and a walnut stained purple.  They make me wish I had little ones of my own to utilize them!

If you’re interested, these are for sale.  Contact me at lauraleeimhoff (at) gmail (dot) com

UPDATE: Wednesday, November 16 at 8:30PM Central, BOTH stools have been SOLD.

Studio Tour Galore!

postcard_front

Last weekend was the start of the East Austin Studio Tour.  Unfortunately, I was cuddled up with a box of tissues, tea, antibiotics, and an inhaler fighting off a case of bronchitis and walking pneumonia.  Not ideal for showcasing my work, but I’m slowly on the mend and definitely looking forward to sharing all sorts of goodies this coming weekend.  The weather is supposed to be gorgeous!  I will be there with my dear friend, Kat O’Day, and Nicole Parker.  I hope to see some of you out there!

Monthly Music

I always post on my Music Page (under the Shows section) about upcoming gigs, but I rarely utilize the blog section to talk about them. It really never occurred to me to do so until now.

For the last few months, and for the foreseeable future, I have my own little monthly residency at Opa Coffee and Wine Bar on the First Saturday of the Month.  I play from 8 – 10 PM. If you haven’t been to OPA, it’s a great little spot.  One of the last of it’s kind as far as the original South Austin feel.  It’s cozy on the inside and has an expansive kick ass patio to tip back an affordable glass of wine under the giant oak tree.  You really can’t go wrong.  Not only do I work at OPA, because I still have my day job, but performing here is a treat.  The regulars are beyond supportive of what I do, it’s laid back and low pressure.

And yes, while having a monthly residency isn’t anything to brag about, ya know, like a weekly one, it’s a start.  It’s nice to see more and more familiar faces every month and watch it grow.  Hopefully, I’ll get to see some of you out at OPA this coming Saturday, October 1st!

California Knows How to Party

I’m sure every 90’s child read the title and immediately queued up the  2Pac song in their head.  Yep, I do it every time and every August when I head out to Santa Monica to visit one of my closest girlfriends.  This past year marked 10 years of me traveling across the country to visit her, whether it be in Boston, New York, or L.A.  Admittedly, California is my favorite. The sun, the beach, the opportunity to escape the Texas heat and, of course, like any friends that get together… EAT too much, sleep too little, and get dressed up as much as you can! Here are some photo’s from my trip I thought I would share!

Dirty Thirty

I’ve always been secretive about my age.  Maybe it’s that feminine mystique thing or maybe its because I was sneaking into bars to play music well before I was ever twenty one.  Shhhhhh…. don’t tell.

This year is different though.  After being oh, so ill and kind of going through the whole “Am I going to make it?” bit, I’ve hit thirty and I’m ready to party. Of course, rather than a case of champagne and a cheese cake that one might consider the end all be all… I did the opposite: I went to my folks ranch in the middle of nowhere Texas to reset before the next trip around the sun.  I don’t know if it was the wide open spaces, good food, copious amounts of Texas beer, or setting off my own fireworks, but it was exactly what this dirty thirty needed….
