A Partidge & A Pear Tree

Today is the final day before the Handmade Holiday Show at OPA! I thought I would take a moment to share one more post with you before the big day! As promised in my last post on Wednesday, I have something a little on the matchy-matchy side.  To stick with the “what’s in season” category, I thought it only appropriate that pears should be included.  I will have pear embroidered tea towels as well as a pear canned good.  I’m feeling somewhat mysterious this morning and thinking that I might not actually reveal what the pear canned good is… just to leave you hanging, curious, and inquisitive.  Maybe you’ll feel so inspired as to come out tomorrow afternoon?

Hope to see you there, lovelies.

When Life Gives You Oranges

FullSizeRenderWhen I first started experimenting with canning I asked everyone what there favorite jam or jelly was.  The people pleaser inside of me was eager to make an impression.  Naturally, I asked my mother. She was quick to let me know that her favorite flavor out of a jar was lemon curd.  I was quick to learn that it is one of mine too.

Being in Texas we have the luxury of having some really great organic citrus grown in our backyard in McAllen, TX.  G&S Grove, check them out. (Seriously, the best grapefruit I’ve ever had.) So why does delicious curd have to stop with lemons?

I heard through the grapefruit vine that a friend liked grapefruit curd, viola, it appeared!  I had done a blend of grapefruit and orange, which was delightful! This holiday season, I will be introducing straight up orange curd! Yes, I certainly tried my darn-dest not to eat it all before canning it up!

I will have these little babies available at the Holiday Handmade Show at OPA! this Saturday!  See you there!

Blue Christmas, Blue Dresser

IMG_2753Ok, Ok, it’s no secret I’m completely head over heels, and googly eyed over refinishing furniture.  Like most projects they need a home.  A stack of embroidered towels is one thing, but a collection of furniture seems to build up a lot quicker in a one bedroom apartment.

I reached out to my friends to see if anyone was interested in having me refinish a piece for them.   I cast my line and I waited, waited, and finally got a bite, or in this case, a dresser.  I couldn’t be more thrilled!

A couple days later, Melissa dropped off this unfinished pinewood dresser.  She gave me her guidelines of what she was looking for and I ran, ran, ran with it.  I think I was just so excited to finally be able to work with an item that I could put new hardware on! I mean, let’s be real, who hasn’t stood in the home goods section of Anthropologie and ogled the various knobs and handles? I mean, I even have my best friend saved in my phone as “Lindsey Door Knobs” because of our first bonding moment of Anthropologies gorgeous door knobs.

I digress… back to the dresser.  It was fun to work with a completely blank slate. After priming it, I painted this it bright blue with a top a little bit more neutral to be able to tie it into it’s surroundings. The blue was really blue, so I put a nice coat of walnut stain over it to mute the blue and give it some texture.  I lined the drawers with the teal and white patterned paper and screwed in the glass knobs for the final touches.  This piece is so far my favorite that I’ve done!

One more thing, while I have your attention: I will be in another craft fair this coming Saturday at OPA Coffee & Wine from Noon to 4 PM.  Details here.

Busy, Busy, Busy Bee

FullSizeRenderI feel like just the other day I just wrote an entry about how I’ve been working far too much and not focusing on what matters to me.  I get stuck like a hamster in a wheel or a drone working for the Queen.  It’s the daily routine, the grind, the mindlessly trudging away, and when I get to the point of pausing I find myself scratching my head, “Why am I doing this?”

In the past, this hasn’t actually gotten me anywhere, in fact, it’s torn me down and landed me in the hospital.  I go through cycles and I am fine working all the time, but when I come to my senses I feel the need to satisfy myself emotionally and intellectually.  Not too long ago I asked my Facebook friends what I could do to switch things up or to take a break from the monotony. People recommended cutting my hair, going on tour, but the feedback that got me sitting up straight and peaked my interest were “more blIMG_3231og entries.”  They were onto something without a doubt.

Since then, I am still working my day job just as hard as I always have, but have made an effort to focus  on myself, crafting, music, and art just as much.  I have been going non stop for about a month now.  People have asked me, “How do you do it?” They say that I am like a machine!  Maybe that’s true. Of course, giving up coffee and alcohol have been a serious contributing factor to my new found creative energy plus creativity breeds creativity.

I have never felt so fulfilled the last month as I have my entire time living in Austin.  I make sure to spend at least two hours everyday doing something creative for myself.  Not only am I happier but I’m sleeping better too.  If that’s not great enough, I have a lot of new opportunities on the horizon, which I am looking forward to sharing more with you very soon.

xoxo,

Laura Lee

Shameless Promo #2: Brandied Apple Butter

12020033_10207959028273210_4932648787130426837_n Good morning!  Cup of coffee in hand and off we go.  Bleary eyed and half asleep, I’m still capable of a little shameless self promotion at 7:30 in the morning. I’m not sure once I am a little more awake, that I’ll be proud of myself because I was able to wrench myself out of bed a few extra minutes early or slightly ashamed of tooting my own horn on the interwebs for everyone to see.

Either way…. this post…. worth it.

Brandied Apple Butter

I can’t seem to keep this one in stock.  I’ve got an extra big batch for this Sunday.  Bring your cash, credit cards, or just a lot of breakfast tacos to pick up this rich, caramelly-sweet goodness in a jar!  Perfect for fall, actually, it’s just perfect anytime, if I do say so myself.

Shameless Promo #1: Cranberry Conserves

I like to think of this as a little teaser!  Not only a brain teaser for me, seeing as it is 7 am and well before my morning coffee, but for ya’ll to get a little sneak peek for the goodies I will have this Sunday.

FullSizeRenderCranberry Conserves

Thanksgiving is not too far away!  Now, I’m not one to celebrate Turkey Day all that often.  It usually means hectic travel, relatives, and the guilt of stuffing myself, but this year, I’m putting that aside and have created some Cranberry Conserves for the occasion.

For the more traditionalists, I have an Orange Cranberry Sauce that is slightly tart and tangy.  For the more adventurous palette, or maybe just the Texans, I’ve canned up a Jalapeno Cranberry Sauce, sweet with a mild spicy finish.

If there are any jars left over after the event, shipping will be available.

Nevermind the Seesaw: Playgrounds and Parties

POST ACL POSTERIt’s funny how my last post was all about finding balance between life and work. Some time has passed and I haven’t seem to have found it. I mean, I haven’t been going back and forth: teetering on one side and returning to the other. I’ve just gone ahead and broke the damn seesaw.  There’s no guilt though.  In fact, I find myself building a better seesaw, a new jungle gym, revamping the slide and swing set.  I’m so propelled by staying busy, building, working, that I haven’t even taken the time to notice: I’ve built a whole new playground.

Yes, I’m working non-stop.  I, for once, have money in my bank account to show for it, although not much.  I’m traveling. I’m crafting. I’m canning. I’m playing music.  I’m doing it all and it feels so satisfying, but this Sunday, I am taking the time to notice all of it coming together.

This Sunday, I am hosting a craft fair meets music event.  Crafts by yours truly will be available, so I can hopefully reap the benefits of all the crafty things I’ve made (but haven’t been blogging about), baked goods, henna, other art, and jewelry.  I will be posting, hopefully, everyday leading up to the event about goodies I will be selling, and of course, sharing pictures afterwards!

If you’re in Austin, go ahead and check out the Facebook Event with more details: Post ACL Patio Party Event.

Cards for a Cause

The time has come and Valentine’s Day is around the corner.  I typically dread Valentine’s Day… Not in the “I’m single and a tragic spinster” kind of way, but really more for the overload of bad chocolate and the misuse of pink, Pink, PINK EVERYWHERE! I’m always surrounded by loved ones and have so many dear friends to love.  This year is a little different though…

A few weeks ago, Lindsey (I feel as if she needs no introduction at this point) shared a link on my Facebook timeline that Brit & Co. was teaming up with DoSomething to help Meals on Wheals get handmade cards to folks all over the country for Valentine’s Day.

I will be donating the following cards to Meals on Wheels this week!

YOU CAN HELP TOO!

I have updated my ETSY shop with the following cards that I have created over the last few weeks.  For every card that is sold, I will donate $1 to Meals on Wheels!

You can give the cutest cards to your friends, family, and loved ones and know that it’s going to a couple of good causes: Meals on Wheels as well as supporting local artists.

Thoughtful and Thankful Thursday

The last few days of the first month of 2015 are rapidly approaching and I am thrilled with the amount of productivity that I have been able to maintain over these last few weeks.  Today though, I woke up with an overwhelming sense of gratitude.

I never in my wildest dreams thought I wanted to play music.  It just happened, but now, I realize that I couldn’t live without music.  I love to write, sing, play, and perform.  Like any field or art, there is constant room for improvement, growth, etc.  Yes, I am sure, that like any field or art, there are many moments of self doubt.  I feel as if I experience the later more than I should.

As an artist or a musician, each piece you create has a little bit of you in it.  You offer that openly to the world for the taking, the critique, as well as the rejection.  Sure, as an artist you should be able to remove yourself from that situation, but the reality is that you can’t.  It is difficult not to be personally involved and even more so not to take the negative personally.  I have tried very hard to avoid the negative.  I find myself to be my harshest critic, therefore I am often hesitant to share my work, in this case my songs.

This month, I forced myself in a way that I have never done before to share my music.  I submitted one of my songs to the Tiny Desk Concert Series Concert.  Now, we will completely overlook my strong dislike for contests anyway, and embrace the notion that I took a huge step.  I submitted my video to the NPR contest and was hesitant to let anyone else know that I had entered my video, but I overcame that too.  Since I have let go of this fear of sharing my work out of receiving negative feedback, I have received anything but that!  Nothing but good has come from it and it has proved to be a valuable lesson.

Now I have shared this video, the links and articles that it has been included in (by Ovrld and KUT Austin) all over Facebook but what I haven’t been able to mention, or at least communicate clearly enough is my overwhelming sense of gratitude to those that have liked, shared, and given me the support that I have needed!  I have always felt has if I have never fit in here in the Austin music scene, this week has proven otherwise and has given me the momentum I need to keep propelling myself forward.

Thank you to the following folks for sharing links, tagging me in posts, etc. I couldn’t feel this way without you. (There are many, many more of you, but this is the beginning)

Lisa Kettyle (Austin badass: barista, promoter, pedicabber, the list goes on)

Lee Jaster (fellow singer/songwriter)

Alexis Alexander (in need of ancupuncture? She’s your girl!)

Avi Hartman (badass welder- video was filmed in his warehouse)

Terri Lee (that adorable dress I’m wearing… hers!)

KUT Radio, Austin

Ovrld

*NOTE*- I realize the winner’s of the Tiny Desk Concert Contest won’t be announced until the end of February and I most likely won’t be one of them, but for now, I am feeling like a winner! Thanks ya’ll! (Yes, so cheesey, I’m sorry)

The Creative Wave of 2015!

2015 is starting way better that I could have ever imagined it.  It is definitely far more busy, that is for sure.  Remember how I said last post, “creativity breeds more creativity”? Well, it is breeding here at the Imhoff household like bunnies.  Last week, I wasn’t even able to write a post to share. I feel so proud about everything I have done that I don’t even feel the least bit of guilt for having not written.

Last week alone, I performed three times, finished embroidering a towel, edited about 5 different videos, made progress on a furniture refinishing progress, put the finishing touches on a new song, submitted another song to NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Contest, as well as went out to see three different musicians perform as well.  I feel better than ever about what I am doing. You have a great deal to do with that, so thank you for your support, your likes, and your following.

One of my performances last week was a performance with Melissa Engleman.  A lovely and adorable Singer/Songwriter here in the Austin area.  We streamed our show live from my living room.  Check out the video for a few highlights:

We had so much fun and we are looking forward to hosting another show via Concert Window soon.  Technology is great!  We were able to have a much more intimate show, able to chat with our audience, all while hanging out in my own home. What’s not to love?!

I will be posting more later this week about upcoming shows, handmade items, and, fingers crossed, the latest piece of refinished furniture!
