Cardamom Pear Tart

The holidays are just around the corner! I’m already dreamily planning Thanksgiving dinner but to hold me over I can’t help but make things that taste like the holidays. One of which is taking advantage of seasonal produce like pears. For this recipe I used these delightful Asian pears, but you can also get away with Bosc pears or Russett apples. For a more savory version of this tart, scroll down to the notes below.

Cardamom Pear Tart

  • 4-6 pears, pealed and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cardamom
  • butter for greasing pan
  • puff pastry dough
  1.  Remove the pastry puff from freezer to thaw
  2. Preheat oven to 375ºF
  3. Roll out the pastry sheet and curl edges of dough to form 1/2 inch crust
  4. In a saute pan on medium heat, melt butter and honey
  5. Add pears and cardamom to honey butter mixture
  6. Cook pears until they begin to soften, but still keep their structure. Roughly, 5 minutes
  7. Once pears reach desired softness, layer pear slices on puff pastry
  8. Drizzle excess honey butter mixture on top
  9. Bake for 20-23 minutes or until crust begins to turn golden brown.
  10. Let tart cool before cutting
  11. Serve with whipped cream and enjoy!

Note: If you want a more savory tart, I highly recommend adding crumbles of goat cheese under the pear slices and sprinkle with sea salt.

A Partidge & A Pear Tree

Today is the final day before the Handmade Holiday Show at OPA! I thought I would take a moment to share one more post with you before the big day! As promised in my last post on Wednesday, I have something a little on the matchy-matchy side.  To stick with the “what’s in season” category, I thought it only appropriate that pears should be included.  I will have pear embroidered tea towels as well as a pear canned good.  I’m feeling somewhat mysterious this morning and thinking that I might not actually reveal what the pear canned good is… just to leave you hanging, curious, and inquisitive.  Maybe you’ll feel so inspired as to come out tomorrow afternoon?

Butters and Jellies and Jams! Oh my!

butter jellies jamsOk, I cannot stop talking about cooler weather!  It means fall is here, sweaters, scarves, and all things pumpkin!  It also means that I am not avoiding my stove top and oven like the plague, which means when I got my latest order for a gift basket I was jumping for joy!  I had already been canning cucumbers like a mad woman despite the heat and humidity, but now I can have all the windows open on a cooler evening, have a glass of wine, crank up Miles Davis, and bust the ol’ recipe cards out.

I wanted to do something just a little different for this gift basket.  With the combination of seasonal produce and the love I have for the combination of sweet and savory flavors, I decided to play with both ideas!  Nettie’s Bread & Butter Pickles, Jalapeno Jelly, Ginger Peach Jam, and brand new to my recipe collection: Rosemary Pear Butter, were the winners for this little basket.  I must say the Rosemary Pear Butter paired wonderfully with my glass of Côtes du Rhône!  

The basket has been sent off and I eagerly await to get feedback! But like all batches of pickles, butters, jellies, and jams (oh, my) I am left with a little extra!  What does that mean?!  Well, for those that are interested in trying some new treats, but aren’t quite ready to make the commitment to a pint size jar, or perhaps you too are in search for a gift basket for someone… Look no further!  I have put together a trio of sweet and savory gift bags that need homes!
